A Special Event for World Elderly Day on October 1 Organized by Faculty Members of the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at Our Faculty
The Science Communication Office, operating under our university’s Corporate Communications Coordination Office, continues to organize events that bring scientists together with the public and highlight the intersection of science and everyday life. In this context, a special program was held on October 1, World Elderly Day, bringing together residents of the Bandırma Özel Altunizade Nursing Home and Elderly Care Facility with our university’s academic staff.
During the event, Dr. Canan Demir, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at our Faculty of Health Sciences, discussed the effects of proper breathing and diaphragm exercises on health. Participants experienced these breathing exercises hands-on through balloon-blowing activities.
Dr. Derya Azim, also from the same department, emphasized in her presentation titled “Health and Independence” that regular exercise is one of the cornerstones of a healthy life. She highlighted the importance of muscle strength and balance in preventing falls.
Our Vice Rector and Head of the Department of Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ebru Kaya Mutlu, who participated in the event, demonstrated how exercises should be properly performed using examples. Prof. Dr. Ebru Kaya Mutlu answered questions posed by the nursing home residents and performed the exercises hands-on with the participants.
This event, organized by our Science Communication Office, helped both raise awareness of healthy living among older adults and foster awareness within the community.
