As part of an interdisciplinary study, Associate Professor Dr. Emre Çiydem from our Department of Nursing, in collaboration with Associate Professor Dr. Sedat Arslan from the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Associate Professor Dr. Hande Öngün Yılmaz, has introduced a new concept to the scientific community in the field of eating behavior. The concept of “Sedatic Hunger,” defined in the study and presented for the first time in the literature, stands out as a notable innovation in the international academic arena.
“Sedatic Hunger” refers to a state in which an individual engages in eating behavior purely in response to a physiological need, entirely independent of pleasure, taste, or emotional satisfaction. In this respect, it offers a significant conceptual contribution to the fields of nutrition, dietetics, and nursing by shedding light on the behavioral and psychosocial dimensions of individuals.
The study was published in Current Nutrition Reports, one of the prestigious journals in the field of health and nutrition sciences, classified in the Q1 category (Impact Factor: 5.5).

The article also thoroughly examines how social and psychological factors such as depression, loneliness, economic pressures, and a demanding work life can lead individuals toward sedatic hunger. It further notes that preliminary preparations have begun for the development of a “Sedatic Hunger Scale (SAS).”
We extend our congratulations to Associate Professor Dr. Emre Çiydem and the research team for this valuable work, a product of interdisciplinary scientific collaboration, and we wish for the continued growth of academic productivity within our Nursing Department.
